NAIDOC in Kununurra

It is NAIDOC week this week.
NAIDOC originally stood for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Nowdays its usually though of as standing for for National Aboriginal and Islander Day Of Celebration. Funny how one day of celebration turns into a whole week.

The whole town turned out in Kununurra for a party centred around the Skate Park in the middle of town. Within an hour about 200 young people just turned up out of nowhere. The skate park was going a little too bananas for me to try out my testy balance on a board.
There was dancing, food (Kangaroo tail and damper), stalls, and… the famed Kununurra baby contest.
A couple of the highlights were meeting a young man who insisted we check out some of his brilliant landscaping work in an office complex in town; and chatting with a young lady who had just begun a traineeship that she had been working towards for a really long time. It doesn’t matter where you are, we all have dreams.
Of course THE most memorable part of the day was a short stint on Kimberley Radio (turn your dials to it if your up there). My interview was book-ended by songs by Johnny Cash – if that gives you an idea of the demographic of Kimberley Radio. It was really good fun, and someone from town even said they heard me on it!
