Sikh Temple Sunday

Posted July 18, 2005 • Updated August 10, 2005

I was invited to visit the Sikh Temple in the Perth suburb of Canning Vale to meet and talke with their young people. The Sikh Association of WA heard about the project of bringing young Australian Voices to the UN, and got really excited by it and were keen to support the project. It was far too cool an opportunity to miss.

So clad with a rolled up beanie on my head I went to their prayer service.

It was such a cool day and I felt so welcomed, and accepted into their community. I even got to address the congregation. It was such a wonderful opportunity to chat with young people of the Sikh faith about how they juggle their faith (which is often quite conspicuous for the lads who wear a turban) and going to school or uni or work. It’s quite inspiring to see how these young people incorporate their strong beliefs - that on the surface could easily alienate young people from their peers - into their daily lives. To these young people it wasn’t a big deal - it’s just what they did.

Now that is cool.
